There is no doubt that hardships change us. Part of going through the junk in life includes making a decision about how you’ll allow that hardship to change you. Refuse to allow hardship to win by changing you into a woman you don’t want to be. Single motherhood is a hardship that I once thought would break me. But, I realized that I could use my experience to grow into a stronger and better woman. Single motherhood doesn’t get to make me broken, bitter, or fearful. Hoping your Christmas season is peaceful and joyful. But, if this season is a hard one for you, try to seize the joy and good that you can. Cling to the good moments and small joys. Next year will be better and your kids will likely not remember the hard Christmas seasons one day. My children finally feel normal at Christmas with ‘just’ mom, but those first years were rough. I’m so encouraged by the fact that they don’t remember just how tough it was. The Christmas magic is still alive and well even though for several years Christmas was so hard. I feel the storm most during the holiday season. How about you? Single motherhood feels its hardest right now. The expectation of complete happiness and gratefulness, coupled with the pressure of getting it all done and making all the memories. Huge. Overwhelming. Impossible. Lonely. Sail that raging sea by realizing it isn’t going to be perfect. Grasp the good, gratefulness and happiness that you can. But, also acknowledge the suckiness of single mothering through the holidays. You don’t have to be 100% happy and grateful. You can feel sad, lonely and overwhelmed while making the best of a hard holiday season. Feel grateful and happy whenever you can, but don’t force yourself to brush your hard feelings under the rug for the whole season. Batten down the hatches. You are going to make it!
